  • Aquatic Invasive Species: A Minnesota Handbook --

A good booklet about AIS was put together with information from the University of MN Extension, MN DNR and MN Sea Grant resources called “Aquatic Invasive Species:  A Minnesota Handbook”.  Click Here for a link to that Handbook.

  • Water Quality Notice --

Maple Lake water test 8-24-2018 results-
The algal toxin test showed that the microcystin concentration has fortunately decreased. The test strip indicated that there was some algal toxin present, but the concentration appeared to be somewhere between 0 and 1 ppb, which should be a safe concentration that is in line with some drinking water recommendations/standards.

Orginal Post:  The Maple Lake Improvement District would like to share some information on “blue-green algae” in Maple Lake. On July 27, 2018 Corey Hanson with the Red Lake Watershed District completed a second water test for algae, with results of 5ppb. This is the same results as the mid June test.

The EPA categorizes the level of 4ppb as a low risk, and the NOAA website lists 4ppb as a level that could be an irritant to people with allergies. 5 Parts Per Billion (ppb) was explained as having 5 damaged golf balls out of one billion golf balls.  Again,  5ppb is a concern and people using the lake should take notice and make judgment themselves on there use of the lake.

The Maple Lake Improvement District takes regular water samples from 4 locations on the lake and the test results can be viewed at RMB Laboratories website. The MLID takes water quality seriously and are watching the lake quality closely.

    Thanks
